The Mt. Gox Hack
Mt. Gox* was a cryptocurrency exchange that accounted for over 70% of all bitcoin transactions at its peak. It was such a beast of a bitcoin business that it famously suspended trading for a couple of days in 2013 to let the market cool down and catch its breath.
Started in 2010 by Jed McCaleb, sold in 2011 to Mark Karpeles, the sheer magnitude of coins stored on the exchange made it a honey pot for hackers and opportunists.
In 2014, Mt. Gox was hacked and declared bankruptcy.
At first, 850,000 BTC was “stolen”; however, 200,000 BTC was “found” a short time later – apparently misplaced.
With the price of Bitcoin skyrocketing since 2014 lows, the future of the Mt Gox BTC holdings is still being held hostage by a multi-million dollar lawsuit by CoinLab, which is ongoing.
